The IAP is a community based project that provides mathematics literacy instruction to youth ages 4 to 17. The curriculum is created, developed and delivered by student youth workers who attend public schools in Marion County. These student instructors have excellent math skills as measured by their grade point averages as well as successful completion of the ISTEP exam. In addition, each student has demonstrated leadership ability by volunteering to serve before being compensated for their effort. The IAP began at Forrest Manor Middle School in 1991.

The Algebra Project Curriculum was introduced to Kaleidoscope Youth Center in the summer of 1995. Since then the IAP has collaborated with Atkins Boys & Girls Club, Wheelers Boys & Girls Club, St. Joan of Arc NYO, Citizens Multi-Service Center, Mapelton Fall Creek Neighboorhood Association, Martin Luther King Center, Girls Inc. North and South, Joy Summer Youth Program, St. John's Missionary Baptist Church and the Northside AYS program. Each advancing year, the IAP expands its' service to additional Youth Service Agencies. The IAP is fast approaching its 10th year of operation. The IAP currently employs ten full time student instructors while eight pre-trained instructors await placement. While these instructors await assignment, they remain a vital component of the JOY summer youth collaborative. The IAP and NPY collaborative training for capacity building has been a key element in developing successful instructors.
